VA Linux Warns of Growing Losses

FREMONT, Calif. (Reuters) - VA Linux (news - web sites) Systems (NasdaqNM:LNUX - news), the developer of software and products for the Linux computer operating system, on Tuesday lowered revenue and earnings expectations for its fiscal quarter ended January 27, 2001, citing overall economic weakness.

The company estimated revenues for its second fiscal quarter at $43 million to $50 million and said its loss for the quarter, excluding noncash charges, will be in the range of 24-28 cents a share. Wall Street analysts on average had expected a loss of 14 cents a share.

``We are in the midst of an overall economic slowdown which is affecting all of our sources of revenue, ranging from Linux servers to Web advertising banner sales,'' company Chief Executive Officer Larry Augustin said in a statement.

Given the slowdown, VA Linux lowered its guidance for year-over-year fiscal 2001 revenue growth to 60 percent from its previous estimate of 125 percent.

The company also warned that current economic conditions are creating a difficult pricing environment resulting in lower gross margins and said it intends to focus on higher margin business and to manage expense levels.
