The whole school gets together once a week on the playground by class. They stand in lines in class groups. They sing a song and say the PoA. They sing each song for a month she just said. They have also sung America the Beautiful, but she can't remember what else. After the songs/PoA, they award Student of the Month, the principal makes announcements, like upcoming fund drives, skate night... I became upset last year when Principal told kids she would eat dog food if they sold a given amount at some fund raiser. She's a good sport but I thought that was lacking in dignity.

Hi thread,

Karen, I too have left off the "for all" of the pledge of Allegiance since I was in high school. I thought I was the only person in the world who did something like this. Amazing.

And YYB, we actually sang songs that were billed as "Negro Spirituals" when I was in grade school. I remember one going: "Gonna jump down, turn around, pick a bale of cotton, gonna jump down turn around, pick a bale of hay."

That sounds mighty spiritual, huh?

It's been a long day, I'm signing off, but I'm glad the discussion continues. The LWP is becoming some kind of intellectual all-night diner; there's something to chew on 24 hours a day. Thank you all.
