Have you read the Harry Potter books, X? You sound like Dobby here.

Cheers, Dan.

And this woman looked at me really strangely- so I said "I have new socks and they fit". And then she looked at me even MORE strangely which made me want to put her at ease so I said "I don't get out much"- which was supposed to help her understand why I was excited about socks, but which I actually now think made her think that most of the time I am confined in some lunatic asylum where they keep socks away from me so I do not injure myself.

Were you wearing the socks on your hands or around your neck? You were not clear about what they eventually fit. Sometimes people are not comfortable when you step outside the box and match body parts with unexpected articles of clothing. This woman may have been frightened at the concept that socks can be worn on the hands, unless you call them gloves. Had you called them gloves, she would have immediately relaxed, although she may have wondered why you were born with no thumbs. BUt this would have aroused her sympathies, rather than her suspicions and she might have opened the door for you.
Of course, she may have been Tibetan. In Tibet, it is a sign of ill-breeding and gaucherie to be seen publicly with one's socks on one's hands, although it is appropriate once one has married to wear them to bed.
