($32)Intel shares move higher after results..RFMD NVLS AMCC HAND


NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Intel shares moved higher in after-hours trading Tuesday after the semiconductor giant reported fourth-quarter profit that beat Wall Street's expectations but said first quarter sales will decline.
In a busy late trading session, earnings reports also came from Juniper Networks, Novellus Systems, Handspring Inc., RF Micro Devices and Applied Micro Circuits Corp.

The broader markets were mixed in regular trading hours Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 1.2 percent to 10,652.66, while the Nasdaq finished down 0.3 percent to 2618.55. See recap of Tuesday's action.

Intel

Intel Corp. reported fourth-quarter net income of $2.6 billion, or 38 cents a share. In the year-ago quarter, Intel earned 34 cents a share.

The Santa-Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker reported revenue of $8.7 billion compared with $8.2 billion during the year-ago quarter. Analysts expected $8.75 billion.

Intel said it expects sales for the first quarter to be down 15 percent due to economic uncertainty. See full story.

Intel (INTC: news, msgs) shares moved higher in after-hours trading, gaining 3.19 percent to $32.36 after closing down 2.3 percent to $31.38 in the regular session.

Juniper Networks

Shares of Juniper Networks moved up after the infrastructure company beat fourth-quarter estimates by 6 cents a share.

Juniper Networks (JNPR: news, msgs) posted fourth-quarter pro forma earnings of $84.6 million, or 24 cents a share, compared with $60.3 million, or 17 cents, in the third quarter.

Analysts polled by First Call expected a profit of 18 cents a share.

Revenue for the quarter totaled $295.4 million, up 47 percent compared with the $201 million recorded last quarter.

Juniper shares rose $9.13 to $137.13 on Island ECN.

Novellus Systems

Novellus Systems (NVLS: news, msgs) advanced nearly 13 percent, reversing a losing session, after the company beating expectations.

The company reported pro forma fourth-quarter net income of $104.4 million, or 76 cents a share, compared with $33 million, or 27 cents a share, during the same quarter last year.

Analysts surveyed by First Call expected earnings of 70 cents a share.

Pro forma revenue was $425.1 million compared with $191.7 million during the same quarter last year. Analysts expected revenue of $413.6 million.

Order backlog by the end of the quarter was a record $575.7 million with cash and short-term investments of $1.152 billion.

Novellus shares added $4.94 to $43.69 after closing down $3.81 to $38.75.

Novellus' announcement gave lift to semiconductor equipment companies KLA-Tencor Corp. (KLAC: news, msgs) and Lam Research Corp.

KLA-Tencor gained $4.75 to $41.94 after dropping $2.50 to $37.44, while Lam Research (LRCX: news, msgs) rose $2.81 to $23 after slipping 50 cents to $20.19.

Handspring Inc.

Handspring (HAND: news, msgs) shares rose 6.7 percent after the company said strong demand for its hand-held computers contributed to narrower-than-expected second-quarter losses.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said its second-quarter net loss was $15.2 million, or 15 cents per share, compared with $10.1 million, or 32 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Handspring was expected to report a loss of 16 cents per share, according to the average estimate of analysts polled by First Call.

Revenue for the quarter grew to $115.6 million, up 600 percent compared to second quarter of last year. Read full story.

The shares added $3 to $47.88 after closing down $2.75 to $44.88.

Applied Micro Circuits Corp.

Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC: news, msgs) beat analyst expectations, posting third-quarter earnings 2 cents a share above the consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial.

The San Diego-based company said third-quarter net income was $48.1 million, or 16 cents per share, compared with $12.1 million, or 5 cents per share, for the comparable year-earlier quarter.

Revenue for the quarter was $143 million compared with $45.8 million in the third quarter 1999.

Shares moved up $4.81 to $75.19 on Island ECN, after closing down $1.25 to $70.38.

RF Micro Devices

Shares of RF Micro Devices (RFMD: news, msgs) fell 6.4 percent in after-hours trading after the company met quarterly expectations.

RF Micro reported net income for the quarter of $7.8 million, or 5 cents a share, compared with net income of $12.6 million, or 7 cents per share, in the comparable quarter a year earlier.

RF Micro reported revenue of $79.9 million compared with $73.2 million during the same quarter last year.

Shares slipped 38 cents to $22 on Island after closing down $2.50 to $22.38.
