Long on fiber has more cash left than you will ever dream of having..... read it and weep Juniper Networks Conference Call Notes from January 16, 2001 (taken while researching Intel's quarter as well....so take it all with a grain of salt) Earnings announcement can be found here:juniper.net Q4 2000 results • Revenue of $295.4 Million = 47% sequential growth and 550% y/y • EPS of $.24 (Estimates were $.18) • 1378 units/20100 ports shipped made up the revenues • Global demand continues • 35% of revenue came from international sales in the Q and 35% of full year revenue was from international • MCI Worldcom contributed more than 10% for full year 2000 - the only large customer over 10% full year • Ericsson and MCI both represented 10% of revenues of Q4 • Ericsson deployed two major ISP's with M160's and M20's • Saw strong business from every region and every type of network operator • Market for mobile IP remains a very exciting area for Juniper (partnership with Ericsson) • Side note by BB: Hey, with TTM EPS Juniper's PE finally dropped below 300! <ggg> • Targeting three markets - systems, software and emerging mobile IP • Organization's size tripled in 2000 (head count is over 900) • 12 month lead in their segment - high barriers to entry • Sees opportunity to protect their 12 month technology lead going forward • What about 2001? • It's not a market about dot.coms, but about building virtual value chains • Seeing disruption and dislocation accelerating the rate of change. Not all companies will win in this space. Too much venture capital went to too many companies that won't be around at the 'end of the day'. Winners and losers will begin to separate going forward. Scrutiny wll begin to emerge from investors, customers, buyers, partners, suppliers, etc... . • Reduced visibility with economic conditions, but committed to execution and raising guidance. • book to bill greater than 1 in the last quarter • Expects International revenue to remain 35 - 40% • Q1 guidance of 12 - 15% sequential growth • Management upped full year 2001 revenue guidance to $1.5 - $1.6 Billion • gross margin was 64.7% for full year 2000 (I missed what it was for the Q - sorry.) • target gross margin continues to be in the 62 - 65% range • $90 Million in R&D for 2000 (13% of revenues) • 35.3% was full year operating margin for 2000 • 32% tax rate for 2001 beginning in Q1(was 33% in 2000) • Cautiously optimistic about the component situation (shortages) • Customers are savvy and are understanding the IP network vision • Demand is as strong as ever. Self-inflicted pause or is it a slowdown? That's why they commented on visibility. Guidance has been raised based on the visibility they do have. • They are hearing the shift from legacy to IP is underway • M5 and M10 revenue contribution in the Q (access space) • revenue base pretty much mirrors the content base throughout the globe in terms of the Internet • Juniper is aggressively investing in new products and platforms (Scott says "Juniper doesn't comment on products not shipping. Rest assured, they will be aggressive as ever.") • A large percentage of the M5 and M10 are being deployed in Europe • Current core products like M40 and M160 will have longevity as they will become access products in the future as the core products progress. • Remain convinced that there will only be 2 horses that win in the end of this market. They don't see a third player possibility. • Interest income over next two quarters will decline because they are buying a piece of land across from HQ in Sunnyvale with cash. • Activity with Nortel has been increasing and Juniper continues to be pleased with the relationship. Focused on a best in class combination of optical and core routing. • 768 market needs better optical infrastructure at long distances before the transition to this product comes to the fore. Juniper is watching this very closely and they have partnerships throughout the optical space. It looks like it is not a short term probability, but a longer term one. • Excited about the prospects of ethernet in the metro going forward. The simplicity is a big plus. It's not a software intensive game, so Juniper is not that interested. They have partnered with Extreme and Yikes (?). • All were thanked for participating in the CC. Yet another excellent quarter and conference call.
