I think that because of that (diverse systems) and the fact that DSL has run into so many problems and higher costs than expected, the U.S. market needed to wait for an accepted standard to mature. DOCIS is likely to be the adopted standard and proprietary systems will face an uphill battle. My opinion is fairly causal - I have not researched the standards.
