<I think the Democrat Party embraces most of what you list here, do they not?>

Clinton was a very decent man in regard to social, racial and women's issues. But he really alienated the Left in this country by the way he handled National Health Care when he first came to power in 92. It made the Left wonder whether he was really sincere. On the other hand, it was really refreshing to see him married to a woman with an active mind and career rather than the usual plastic "dingbat" whose prime interest is her "china" or jewelry.

I love Thoreau. I named one of my sons, Henry David, after the "Greatest American," as Emerson called him and wrote an essay on his behalf. My favorite Thoreau is not Walden, but "Friendship, Walking, Life Without Principle(Government?) and above all, his Journals."

Thoreau did fall in love with his solitude. But he was a lot more than that. He was a real rugged individualist who loved Humanity and demanded the best from his friends and Life.

Here is an Emerson site with many of his earlier essays which were never published. It's great if you have a Doc reader for the Palm:

PS I read Thoreau when I was hiking the trails in the National Parks in this country in the early 70's while I was "On the Road" (Jack Kerouac) during the summer months when I was in College.
