I think that's because so many of the conservatives have criminal records and they like their guns.

Ashcroft was often the point man opposing the Clinton nominations. The word I hear is that Ashcroft is going to be confirmed specificly as a slap in the face to Nader supporters who did so much to get him installed. They will then be reminded of that over and over.
