At that point he was running unopposed for re-election and still lost.

He was not running unopposed. It was stated long before the election that the Missouri governor would appoint Jean Carnahan.

Part of the problem was his hands were tied in the election. You can't effectively run against a widow who lost her husband and son so recently.

Perhaps that is why he was offered the job as Attorney General.

I believe you're right in that he wouldn't have been offered the job if he'd won the Senate election.

I had thought that his opponent was killed in another election.
Mrs. Callahan introduced Mr. Ashcroft to the Senate yesterday.
It is customary for the Governor to introduce the nominated
AG.
