In a recent conference keynote speech I saw, Scott McNealy ... admittedly not the most unbiased witness ... made a case for the growth of functions on the internet being so huge and so based on open protocols like XML that MSFT would become a minor player. That may be overstating the case a bit, but I see no sign of MSFT achieving a hold on any IP controlling the development of the internet.
