Washington Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport each purchased two Identix Live Scan systems; John F. Kennedy International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport each purchased one Identix Live Scan system. Installations of the Live Scan systems for Washington Dulles, Reagan National and JFK International took place in December 2000. It is anticipated that installation of the Live Scan system for Boston Logan will occur by February 2001. Identix CEO Robert McCashin commented, ``We are pleased that our Live Scan systems were chosen to provide easy compliance with mandated employee background checks by four of the busiest airports in the nation. The Airport Security Improvement Act of 2000 expands the electronic fingerprint transmission project into an aviation industry-wide program, and we look forward to the opportunity to provide our equipment to additional airports in the future. ``This is yet another example of the growing use for our Live Scan equipment for the commercial markets,'' McCashin continued. ``We continue to dominate the Live Scan market, and currently have installations in more than 30 States and 4 countries.'' In an effort to increase aviation security, the House of Representatives passed legislation in October of 2000 that would require criminal background checks for all people who apply for a job as a baggage and checkpoint security screener, or any job that will give them access to the airfield. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee was prompted to move legislation after hearing testimony last March citing that the turnover rate among security screeners ranged from 100 to 400 percent per year, and that many screeners did not have adequate security training. The bill, S. 2440, the Airport Improvement Security Act of 2000, takes several steps to improve aviation security, including: Mandating fingerprint checks for all employees who will have access to the airfield or who will be responsible for screening passengers and their baggage. Previously, fingerprint checks were required only where a background investigation revealed gaps in a person's employment history. Expanding the electronic fingerprint transmission project into an aviation industry-wide program. Each airport, airline, and screening company will have the option of deciding whether they want to participate in this new program.
