You don't have to be sarcastic to make your point. It seems to me that one of the basics of all this discussion ought to be conversing with an individual, rather than "[the other] guys", "everyone", "the liberals", "the conservatives", and so on. Yes, I know that some people on both sides do it. What I am saying is that some people don't. You don't have to do it to make a point. Also, with all due respect, putting words in someone's mouth is not good style. You can have style.
