John, Re: So far, this hasn't worked out, to my knowledge.

For its previous purchase, I can still say that(not turned out as Intel expected) but for Xircom, I just don't have a single reason to support it. Xircom's product is almost 100% end user based and Intel's strength is definitely not in this area. The main product line for Xircom as far I can tell are those PCMCIA network cards which Intel has its own offering and is slowly become an integrated part of a notebook. So what is so worthy in Xircom to pay a 30% premium ?

I think Intel's thoughts are that they can buy an also ran, leverage Intel manufacturing skills, technology, and their distribution to make the company a leader. Also, I think Intel thinks of themselves, in buying other companies, as a consolidator of different but complimentary technologies that can become bigger than the sum of their parts. So far, this hasn't worked out, to my knowledge.

John,

If that's their strategy, I don't think its a good one...I think tech innovation moves too quickly. They paid a lot of $$$ for XIRC and I don't think they will get a lot out of it...even if is in lucrative notebooks.

As for the price, I thought Intel was going to prove A. Kumar wrong....but it may turn out he's right. If it drops to $26 like he predicts, I will buy more for my main portfolio.
