This communications server/VoIP gateway improves on version 2.4 by enabling trunk-side connections to PBXs (Version 2.4 only provided iPBX functionality and VoIP gateway apps on the extension side). The trunk-side connections permit networking of multisite PBXs via the WebSwitch to an existing IP network. The upgrade also integrates with gatekeepers that can network together an unlimited number of WebSwitches. The new WebSwitch 2000 still sports those enterprise-class PBX-worthy features, too. Favorites include built-in voicemail and auto attendant, eight-party call conferencing, call parking, paging, and SwitchLink administrative program. The WebSwitch 2000's expansion slots can be filled with eight-port analog trunk modules, 16-port analog station cards, or T-1/E-1 trunk modules. WebSwitch 2.5 lists for between $5,000 and $14,000 depending on its configuration. (A WebSwitch supporting 16 IP users starts at $14,000.) Unlike your grandfather's LAN hub, the AP 3021 is almost jackless: phones, laptops, and PDAs "plug" into the 3021 wirelessly, thanks to the 802.11b standard. The 3021's sole jack anchors the 3021 to an everyday Ethernet LAN, which, in this test case, was represented by the cable to the stationary WebSwitch 2000. The WebSwitch 2000 sends voice-carrying packets into the 3021, which then launches the transmission into the blue as radio waves from the unit's two antennae. I was holding Symbol's wireless IP phone, the NetVision Phone, ready to make a call. My partner in this test, Ericsson's Grant Culp, Director of New Business Development, was waiting on his wired phone, which was linked to a 50-pin analog connector on the back of the 2000........... snip Jim
