Linux can be made secure, but in most installations, the security level of Linux is comparable to Windows.

The problem in this discussion is, that Linux both means Linux distributions and the Linux OS (kernel).

What has been hacked here is the Red Hat Linux distribution, not the Linux operating system.

Likely, the Linux kernel is very stable, but a distribution does not need to be stable. Red Hat has gotten a very bad reputation in many user groups after their Red Hat Linux 7.0 release, because they deliver it with a C++ compiler that breaks compatibility in many special cases. Don't go for the free Red Hat Linux 7.0 if you want to set up a server. Go for one of their payment distributions, their 6.2 version or debian or SuSE Linux instead.

The good thing is, you can choose the distribution that fits your purpose best, and it's all compatible, from the wristwatch to the IBM S/390 mainframe.
