I have a hunch that Bush may come to regret appointing Ashcroft as Attorney General. Why? Because he's broken an old rule of politics, the one that says, appoint an Attorney General who is very, very loyal to you because he can make your life miserable if he chooses.

Ashcroft is not from the Bush inner circle. Instead, he is the darling of the Christian Right, and has Presidential ambitions to boot. The temptation to go off on some high-profile crusade that will endear him to his base, not Bush's, is going to be very strong.

And if Ashcroft alienates the conservative Democrats (the left-leaning ones are already a write-off), then he will be a thorn in Bush's side. Bush must have their cooperation to govern from the center, which is the only way he can govern with the Congress as it is presently disposed.
