Yeah, like the churches buying up regional hospitals and then canceling medical services that they find
offensive.

I didn't realize this was going on until you mentioned it earlier. I recall a discussion on another thread about Catholic hospitals and their policies. This is disturbing.

No particular point to this- just an experience I had that reminded me that everything is not so black and white.

While members of a church certainly reflect the general beliefs of the church, it's also true that a church can reflect the beliefs of its members. When I sang with a large Presby church in downtown Dallas, they allowed an organization that offered abortion counseling for teens to use the church, and the demonstrations outside on Sundays were vociferous and very angry. As I drove into the parking garage, which was under guard, lining the streets were people waving horrible signs of the worst partial birth pictures and yelling "murderer" at me. (I was a paid soloist and had no idea what was going on) They had their small children with them, who followed the parents' lead and yelled at us angrily. It was an odd experience to sing that day-- there were police officers patrolling the narthex and sitting along the aisles. A choir member told me that the year before, the demonstrators had marched in right up to the altar and started screaming at the congregation.

This church is very strongly into social action, running the major soup kitchen downtown, a day care center, a shelter. There is no expectation of return- they believe this is what the Gospel calls them to do, and they talk about Jesus, I'm sure. To me it's no different that being told about democracy. By its fruits do ye know it.
