but the example i believe concerned the Ford Explorer in the original piece i posted

The bottom sure fell out of the used prices for Ford Explorers after the Firestone fiasco.

SUVs are a perfect example of what happens in an industry where the government tries to get involved forcing standards. All they are are glorified trucks with cushy interiors and as trucks they were exempt from the safety and emissions standards that passenger vehicles were subjected to. Not only that, somehow the industry was able to convince the American public they were luxury vehicles and to pay a good 10k more than they were worth. Somewhere an auto exec is laughing so hard he is falling off his chair!
