I don't know about that SS benefits part, but what I'm saying is that you'll have several steps where going from 500 to 1000 mHz, then to 2000 mHz etc, none seeming to make much difference individually, but at some point there will be a very important difference and it won't be just due to processor speed.

Maybe the europeans should think of more accurate metrics :) Take the Airbus A3XX jumbo aircraft being designed to compete with Boeng. It's being done on a fast track, entirely designed using computers, such a project would have been simply impossible several generations of computers earlier. This is the kind of thing that makes a serious difference, but which can't be easily measured from one year to the next.

The part about idle cpu cycles isn't pertinent. Most of the tools in the giant Snap-On tool kit at my mechanics workshop are "idle" most of the time. The point is they are available when they are needed.

I don't particularly subscribe to conspiracy theories, I think dollar cost averaging when it was first used resulted in a *drop* in productivity figures, but it was an attempt to more accurately measure something where it was hard to select a useful reference. I don't know about "hedonic pricing" improving the accuracy of these figures, it's certainly a problem if different countries use different metrics.
