Just not enough internal combustion going on to bake out the whole exhaust tract, y'know?

I don't mean to be argumentative (yes, I do) but, I don't buy it. I mean I can believe the tip of your tailpipe (an odd phrase, that) could be about ambient, but there's no way the Honda didn't generate enough heat to dry out the system on that length of trip.

First, the tip should be the coolest part of the exhaust system anyway and it cools off pretty fast. Go underneath about half the body length and grab on.

And part B, no way the incremental efficiency of a car that gets 20mpg compared to one that gets 40mpg could cause an already pretty inefficient engine to run much cooler, if at all. The overall temp of the engine is regulated by the thermostat. The burning of the gas in the combustion process is going to be at about the same temp in any car. One gas car doesn't run that much cooler than another in general because they all work best in a certain temp range. Also, catalytic (another GOOD cat pun here only please, no dogs) converters need the exhaust gas to be hot in order to do their thing which occurs at around 600 degrees F. That'll fry an egg pretty good.

Now, this is just my take and I've been full of hot air before. Interesting that much of the exchange lately here has been about hot air, thanks in large part to my very own self, the Heat Exchanger.

Apologies to Rambie for yet more "guy" talk.
