Sprint PCS will be able to deploy the technology ubiquitously by simply plugging in new 3G channel cards to its existing base stations and adding some new software.

That would be true IF they are planning to use the current charge you by airtime to your data service. Otherwise they need to implement some kind of data networks.

Of course that's not that much of a big deal in comparison to the GPRS/WCDMA world, which is using proprietary standards instead of IETF open standards. Just pretty much put in PDSN, which can be implemented on a ordinary router and there we go.
