"Words of wisdom" from Briefing.com which I thought I would pass on to the thread. (Emphasis mine)

1/18/01[BRIEFING.COM] Early trading was positive as the market, and in particular the tech sector, took heart in the $0.02 better than expected earnings report from IBM (+11 5/8) and the positive outlook for this year... While it may be hard to consider the near triple digit gain posted in the Dow and the 3% surge in the Nasdaq dull, the market deviated little from the early pattern of strength in the tech sectors and more limited interest in much of the remainder of the market... Perhaps adding to the tech focus was a bullish comment from Merrill Lynch... The firm expects tech stocks to rise over the next 4-10 weeks despite poor fundamentals and has raised its weighting in the semiconductors to equal weight from underweight... They are also positive on photonics, applications/middleware software, and technical software.
