Intel, the company that used to be the king of cost control, is now fielding two uncompetitive chips, Celeron and PIII,

Uncompetitive chip (PIII) just won out over Athlon at a company that has no love lost for Intel, to say the least:

cobalt.com

Uncompetitive PIII is also used in all other major OEMs' servers and notebooks, while Athlon's usage is asymptotic to zero.

Blow Hard Dan - Re: ". When the other guy can make 50% margins selling parts equivalent to yours at less than your variable cost, you've got problems."

AMD had an ASP of only $80 last quarter - and you're telling us that it had 50% gross margins?

That's the second consecutive DELCINE in AMD's ASPs - and you think they are doing so swimmingly?

Boy are you in DENIAL !
