It was funny, when I read an earlier post you had posted almost identically what I had written earlier today (and cancelled). Left and Right are only useful as relative measures and I've never seen many cases (at least where people had jobs and families) that it applied all that well.

What drew me to the "porch" wasn't the politics but some people whom I'd known through other contexts (they were posting here). Someone else pointed out that on a site that supports a high-level of interest and participation in the financial sector, "liberal" has to got to be relative!

When I was in college in a conservative area I thought I was liberal - then I moved to the Bay Area. Here, I was almost conservative. But I think living in the Bay Area has probably softened some of the sharper corners. I actually entertain notions of gun-control, but I've always supported individual rights and gay rights. I also didn't think people should be persecuted for their private political beliefs, that a woman should have a right to choose, that resources belonged to us AND the generations not born.

Many of these are hallmark issues for the democrats. But then, I believe in social responsibility. People receiving aid from charity or the government should make an effort to not have anymore kids until they turn their lives around. I think in general, governments should have budgets and stick to them.

Hi Steve,

There's so much meat in your post it's hard to know where to start.

First, I agree completely about one's own political stance being used as the lodestone by which to judge others. On top of that, I believe each person has a particular issue, or constellation of issues, with they pick their political allies. For me, it's the right to choose and homophobia. I don't think I could ever be close to someone who did not believe in a woman's right to choose or who was homophobic.

I know just what you mean about context. In my part of the world I'm a raving liberal, waaaaaay out there. I started the LWP with a certain degree of confidence in my liberal credentials and quickly found that I'm much more middle-of-the-road in my views than I was aware of. I'm pleased that liberals of all shades have found a home there (and here!).

The issue of how the rest of the world perceives the US and constructs their own views of liberal vs. conservative is fascinating. Do you suppose your friends in the Philipines may not think you could be a true liberal, simply because you're American? I've come across this attitude myself.
