A year ago, STRATFOR.com analyzed the situation in the Philippines and forecast that the president would not serve out his term. At this hour, President Joseph Estrada is besieged on nearly all sides and his vice president is moving to take power. Read our extensive analysis and coverage.

Analysis

Having outlasted popular opposition, an impeachment trial and a
souring economy, Philippine President Joseph Estrada is now set
to fall as most elements of his country have turned defiantly
against him.

Across the country, key figures, security forces, politicians,
the business community are abandoning Estrada, a former movie
actor who became president just over a year ago only to be
embroiled in a vast corruption scandal. Only hours ago most of
his cabinet resigned. And his vice president has taken to calling
herself commander in chief, as well as reportedly ruling out any
amnesty for the besieged president.

So confident is the opposition that it has set a deadline of 2200
GMT for the president to resign. Estrada's opponents appear
secure enough to be unwilling at this time to offer him a deal.
Opposition figures say that Estrada wants a pardon and he appears
to be unwilling to make a move in the hopes of getting one,
according to the Straits Times. Vice President Gloria Macapagal-
Arroyo has within hours flatly refused.

"Estrada's in no position to strike a bargain or make
concessions," she said on Friday, according to Agence Prance
Presse. Arroyo is reportedly awaiting a call from the
presidential palace. A three member transition team of hers is
reportedly holding talks with Estrada advisers. The vice
president is reportedly naming new officials.
