Analysis Having outlasted popular opposition, an impeachment trial and a souring economy, Philippine President Joseph Estrada is now set to fall as most elements of his country have turned defiantly against him. Across the country, key figures, security forces, politicians, the business community are abandoning Estrada, a former movie actor who became president just over a year ago only to be embroiled in a vast corruption scandal. Only hours ago most of his cabinet resigned. And his vice president has taken to calling herself commander in chief, as well as reportedly ruling out any amnesty for the besieged president. So confident is the opposition that it has set a deadline of 2200 GMT for the president to resign. Estrada's opponents appear secure enough to be unwilling at this time to offer him a deal. Opposition figures say that Estrada wants a pardon and he appears to be unwilling to make a move in the hopes of getting one, according to the Straits Times. Vice President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo has within hours flatly refused. "Estrada's in no position to strike a bargain or make concessions," she said on Friday, according to Agence Prance Presse. Arroyo is reportedly awaiting a call from the presidential palace. A three member transition team of hers is reportedly holding talks with Estrada advisers.
