The PPro was the first P6 generation product and it was an entirely new design. SMP came up immediately and effortlessly with the 440FX chipset. In fact it worked on the first stepping. The socket7 SMP solutions were a completely different bus design so were of no used on P6 generation products. EV6 was an existing architecture yet SMP is nowhere to be found.
