Barrick said to be eyeing Gold Fields

Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corp. dismissed as rumour it will make a bid for South Africa's Gold Fields Ltd. in conjunction with AngloGold Ltd.

Market sources in South Africa said they believe Barrick may be examining teaming with AngloGold to acquire Gold Fields, a major producer.

But the talk involving Barrick remains speculative. Barrick, one of the world's largest gold producers, has often been named in rumoured deals that have never materialized. AngloGold has long been seen as a suitor for Gold Fields, which last year attempted to merge with Canada's Franco-Nevada Mining Corp
