J.Fieb, I agree that lurkers are encouraged to post. Every piece of information that relates in any way to speculating on the future direction of networking technology can help everyone that reads this thread. I like the concept of building models and collecting bits of information to hang on the model. The more bits of information we can hang on the model, the easier it is to discover an emerging trend before others notice. By posting something and having experts in different disciplines comment on it can give valuable feedback. A broad forum of people commenting can sometimes make technical experts in one narrow discipline see the bigger picture emerging and how technologies could possibly converge.

Here is an old post I made on the Gorilla thread that I think is relevant (the 2nd half) to the Entrada article posted today, about connecting the different SAN Islands over optical backbones, Director to Director.

Eric, Thanks for you posts. I think this emerging market for FC Directors is an exciting one to be watched closely. I have read some posts on SI that say Brocade is working on a new 8 Port Asic, and trying to create a Director. But, as far as McData working on a special ASIC, I am not up on it. But someone like Gus on the EMC thread might know.
As far as WDM and Fibre Channel Director Switches. I think that Infiniband will come into play in the future as well. I am watching the horizon and waiting to see if we eventually see some kind of hybrid DWDM, FC, Infiniband Director come about, that acts like a DSLAM connecting the optical network to the Data Center, or connecting Data Center Islands to each other via the Optical Network. This may be totally out in left field. But it sounds like an interesting product in theory. You could sure eliminate a lot of cabling in a Data Center with this and virtualize the data center more thoroughly. If you ever wanted to achieve millions of video streams, on a Content Delivery Network, generated from a Data Center, I would think this type of Director switch would be the way to do it. Call it the Infiniwave Director.

The FC or Infiniband Director market, in a couple years could become white hot.

Joe

In an effort not to be a flash in the pan I have been backfilling my knowledge base by reading some books, like The Gorilla game, The art of War, Parts of The innovators dilemma...

I'm glad you read The Gorilla Game, J Fieb. Don't be afraid to pop over to G&K thread here at SI to discuss with us your thoughts about the data storage and transfer market. I see Douglas trimmed the 'portfolio' down to the major players in the creation of the SNAX index. Douglas, any chance we can still view the FCIX with a link - or did you 'destroy' it?
