Although private involvement in the stock market has grown substantially since 1987, it is still the province of the upper-middle class and the wealthy, despite the populist language used on CNBS. J6P was undoubtedly affected by the Nasdaq decline, but by how much? Let's not exaggerate the impact.

J6P got hit harder than you think. So many companies phased in 401(k)s by that point so there were a lot of worried worker bees that stopped spending for a few months.

Tough to tell the impact on the whole economy because the Tax Reform Act of '86 also was being felt. That made a bunch of rich people feel pretty bad.
