I take it you're referring to a drop in steel prices now that lumber prices have declined?. You're assuming some contractors have switched back to lumber then?

is there any way of quantifying the degree of substitution beyond the anecdotal?

I'll call him and ask him who manufactures metal studs and what the composition might be. (I have no idea who makes them or even how much steel is in a stud. These things are self-tapping, pretty soft IOW, so who know?) I've always been a wood banger myself.

You'd then have to dig into contruction trade journals or company reports of manufacturers to see if there is a mention of the substituion? And then extrapolate what portion of the total market comprises the substitution?...Yikes!...This info maybe hard to ferret out.
