Enter the religious right wing, that self-congratulatory phrase "moral majority" netting the poor, who are already postponing their riches for those in heaven, so why not vote Repugnican? Vote for values you can't eat. Vote for your own oppression. Church already has you beleiving that it is easier to pass a camel though the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to get to heaven. You might as well vote against your own prosperity!! So they are juiced up on jeezus, pro-life, feel moral indignation at Clinton's sexcapades, even as they are morbidly fascinated even obsessed by it all. They buy Monica on the cover of the Star, and pore over the details, along with Three Headed Alien Baby born to 5 year old! Hillary leaves Bill for Lesbian lover! Convinced that it is god's will, even though they may be in dire need of the social programs they vote against themselves, by voting for that smirky little rich boy, Butch, who couldn't give a ratsass about them. NOW they need positive reinforcement. I hate the premise that the movie Family Man is based on. It seems to be saying, "You know all those high powered executives with expensive toys and habits? Well they just don't know what they are missing. If they did, they'd want what you have. They'd gladly give up that shallow non-gratifying lifestyle for a wife and kids who love them as yours love you." Never mind that the economic circumstance that the hero finds himself in is so much better off than the vast middle and lower economic tiers who will watch that movie. A pretty wife, great kids. This movie is the equivalent of church sheep/shepherd sermons designed to reinforce passiveness. Imagine if the family in the movie were less idealized, more typical or represntative. What if they were living in a trailer, and min wage wasn't cutting it with all those mouths to feed, and there were no insurance for the asthmatic kid, who is triggered by the mold in the floorboards because the roof leaks, and one of em wasn't quite right cause mom didn't get pre-natal car? They can't afford an encyclopaedia, or internet, gym membership, a decent car, safe childcare, or to send the kids to college. But Joe & Family feel alligned with that beautiful family in the movie. They go home feeling that all is well in the world. They are happy that god loves them. They are Republicans. They are christian, they are rich. (Will El Salvador never get a break? )
