The rally of late in the stock is just relief that AMD isn't going broke after all

Agreed it is a relief rally, but IMO it is driven by the Duron infrastructure now being in place and the AMD train on the track again. The 1.33 GHz Athlon will be a niche chip for a while. Q1 is all about selling Duron 850 and Athlon 1.0 in volume.

And why so sour? You may have missed this rally but there are more to come. Let us longs have our day, goodness knows we have been suffering enough recently.

Jim,

During the CC, AMD said that the Palomino would have architectural enhancements that would increase per clock performance "a little bit". They once again emphasized that the main difference between the T-bird and the Palomino was PowerNow!.

This concerns me greatly. The enhancements may give them a viable entry into the laptop market, but I don't see how minor enhancements will allow the level of frequency scaling that the desktop product will need. In addition, I thought I heard a hint of subterfuge when the said that they still "plan" on introducing 1.5 Ghz in Q2 and 1.7 in 2H. I know that I'm reading between the lines, but I trust my instincts.

Pravin.

Jim,

In Q4 I saw roadmaps that had Morgan in January'01 and Mustang in Q4'99.

Where? <broken record alert!> The November '99 CC presentation (slide #73) clearly shows Palomino in H1'01 and Morgan 'mostly' within H1'01, but partly in H2'01, both with arrows extending to all of the other offerings (sledge/claw/thorough/appa) which don't start until 1H'02.

If the mustang core was ready on time the Morgan would be just around the corner. The Mustang core slipped 3 months and so did the Morgan.

Yes, but as stated above, it was an 'on the record' slip.

Even outfits like Lynn Computers were listing 1.33 GHZ Athlons for sale late December...so AMD had hinted this to their distributors.

Then Lynn Computers doesn't pay attention to one of their suppliers?

Something slipped big time at AMD with the Mustang core.
Nothing says it can't slip agin either.

No disagreement here. But so far as I can tell, the slip was divulged to investors in the November '99 CC. Let's just hope this trend continues.

The rally of late in the stock is just relief that AMD isn't going broke after all.

Which means that AMD longs aren't going <completely> broke either. <g>

JJ

Jim, I've learned not to trust roadmaps! Every chip and chipset over the last 3 years has been late, from both AMD and Intel. A roadmap date is the earliest date a product will be ready if everything goes perfectly.

To mention a few:
K6-3 was very late, Athlon was late, KX133 chipset was late, KT133 was late
Coppermine was late, i820 was very, very late, i815 was late, P4 was late
Both Palomino core and P4 1.7 GHz are delayed a quarter
KM133 is overdue, SiS/ALi integrated and DDR chipsets hard to find.
Intel 0.13 PIII Too-a-Late-In 2K01 (now Q3)
P4 SDRAM chipset and DDR chipset are delayed 3 months and 6 months
PC2100 is late.
