Nadine, also note that after a hand recount - post election - Bush gained votes. Looks like an honest recount was never going to help Gore.

The hand recount you are referring to is for one county only. I could have accepted an honest recount going for Bush, though I still believe, just based on the statistics of the vote, that it would have likely gone to Gore.

What upsets me is that no public official (except for the FSC, who bungled things in their own way) ever backed an honest recount. And the Republican line, which said essentially that honest recounts are impossible and you must always trust machines, no matter how badly they are working, is very damaging to the process of holding elections. How do you hold a close election if you cannot trust the public officials in charge of counting the votes?
