Yes it is true in Europe too(and HK as well). But Corolla are considered to be 'full size sedan' and there is lots of 600-1000cc small cars which I doubt anyone will drive in US.

1. If the price of gasoline was $8/gal in the UK, there would be less consumption. If the price of gasoline was $2/gal, there would be more consumption.

2. Note that the marginal propensity of a Californian to drive has absolutely nothing to do with the current problem. The price and supply of natural gas is very different than the price and supply of gasoline.
