John, I agree with the point you are making. A very useful feature indeed. In terms of where it leaves Sandisk, that is not a problem? Sandisk has always supported the use of peripheral cards through its memory slots. CF modems have been available for yrs, but there has not been much demand.

I would b very surprised if at least 1 CF/MMC bluetooth device doesn't show up this quarter.

John <It's four years from now.>

Fortunately that's four YEARS from now. I just want to know where SNDK will be four DAYS from now. ;~>

Nice AH movement - might gap open tomorrow above $42. I missed almost three bucks because I was worried about INTC. THEN, I sold have of my AMD yesterday - and you know what happened there. I hate this 'conservative' stuff. I can't wait until we close on this house!!

"you send the pictures over your cell phone or hotel phone to your home PC, by pressing a button on your camera.
Where does that leave SanDisk?"

No reason you can't take a CF or MMC and upload the image into a portable computer or PDA with a wireless modem and then send the image to an online host or to your own computer base station. Maybe I'm missing something here, but first and foremost is the ability to transmit the image by wireless device, and Sony is not a major player in that market. Alternatively, you could build a camera that included a wireless phone and embedded memory so that after taking several shots, you could transmit directly from the camera. I don't see SanDisk missing out on this market, but given the need for reliable, relatively high speed wireless transmission speeds, I think QUALCOMM and its third generation CDMA patented systems is more likely to profit from this feature than either Sony or SanDisk.

Re: You have a digital camera with 1024 MB of embedded flash, and a Bluetooth chip.

Don't forget that removal for data exchange is only one of the virtues of including a flash card slot in a camera. It also means that the manufacturer can include a minimal amount of flash, thereby keeping the initial (and highly visible) purchase price low. And it allows the customer to decide what memory capacity is appropriate for their purpose and whether that should be a single card or a series of them. Even with Bluetooth, it allows the customer to select the storage size and upgrade very easily. [Compare the ease of upgrading to a bigger CF card with the hassle of taking apart your PC to add more memory. Many non-tech-savvy people are unwilling to open their computers, let alone fuss with memory modules.]

John,

re: It's four years from now...

I am not sure how Bluetooth will influence SanDisk in a few years.

I could envision Bluetooth being built in to nearly every device
you can think of. Target cost for a Bluetooth single chip
solution is under $10 based on what I have read. That could mean
that many devices would have a built-in Bluetooth solution plus
removable or embedded flash storage. I think the need for storage
won't go away just because Bluetooth is developed. Hopefully
SanDisk will be nimble enough to take advantage of the situation,
whether embedded or flash card based.

John,

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Bluetooth will probably go the way of the Irridium satalites. Putting it all together just ain't practical. First is the interfacing (bugs to be worked out...lotsa little bugs.....) next fast reliable wireless data transfer is not just right around the corner and when it comes it will not be cheap. Oh yeah they can do it, but it just isn't practical. Just like Iridium. They did it but it just wasn't practicle.or practical. Now Globalstar is going the way of Irridium followed by bluetooth.

Colored Teeth won't disrupt flash memory in your or my investment lifetime. IMHO

Nice pipe dream though.
