Good comments. I have some R.E. pals who envision a scenario wherein the banks' inventories of relinquished housing reached a point where they would encourage folks to stay and "pay what you can afford" rather than boot them out. The boot would place the mortgage in an already burgeoning "non-performing" category (bad) and expose the property to vandalisn(also bad).

Sounds plausible to me, but it's not an area where I have any expertise.
