Murdoch Set for $40bn TV Deal

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp is reported to be preparing to buy DirecTV, the direct-to-home satellite broadcaster owned by Hughes Electronics.

News Corp is expected to pay Hughes parent company General Motors about $US40 billion for the firm and has put a freeze on all acquisitions in an attempt to save money. Financial officers are even considering the disposal of some assets, according to the London Financial Times.

News Corp announced last week that it was scaling back its $US1 billion deal with WebMD Corp – and, just days earlier, the company said that it was laying off 450 staff associated with the Fox News, Fox Sports and Fox TV network websites. A month before, a worldwide hiring freeze was instituted.

DirecTV offers more than 200 television channels and has more than 9 million customers in the US, making it the country's leading direct-to-home broadcaster. It also has a Spanish language service, DirecTV Para Todas, which offers Spanish language programming from the US, Latin America and Spain, and DirecTV Latin America, which provides television via satellite to more than 1 million customers throughout Latin America.
