Certainly there is uncertainty, and certainly we need a defense adequate to deter and repulse any reasonably likely threat. Comparison of the current US force, and the level of expenditure it currently receives, suggests that our current level of defense readiness and defense spending is more than adequate to achieve these purposes, and I would have to question the current administration's determination to spend more. At what point does such spending become wasteful?

Another important question is whether the money we are spending is being well and wisely spent. It seems odd to me that "fiscal conservatives" that insist so vocally on accountability and waste reduction in social programs are so willing to toss money into the maw of the defense system with so few questions about how it is actually being spent.

Does anybody really believe that we are getting full value for our defense dollars? Is waste somehow less wasteful in the defense budget?
