Fortunately that injustice was changed by the amendment process.

That's the thing. It shouldn't have to have an amendment. It was patently obvious to everyone what the words said. There was no footnote saying: "blacks, Chinese, Irish, or other non-English ancestry people aren't really people".

There was no footnote for women. It was social custom to ignore these people. It is social custom to ignore gays.
