Value Line Geometric Composite Average
The Value Line Geometric Composite Average is an equally weighted price index of all stocks in the Value Line Investment Survey. It is referred to as "geometric" because the index is computed by finding the geometric average. A geometric average is calculated by taking the nth root of the product of n terms. For example: If there are 5 stocks priced at 10, 12, 15, 20 and 16, the geometric average would be the 5th root of (10 x 12 x 15 x 20 x 16) = the 5th root of 576000 or 14.19.

Of the two Value Line Composite Averages, the geometric version is referred to more often than the arithmetic version. On an absolute basis, the result of the geometric average will be less than the arithmetic average.
