Nortel Results Stoke Fiber-Optic Sector Friday January 19 11:23 AM ET By Susan Taylor OTTAWA (Reuters) - Shares in Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE:NT - news) (Toronto:NT.TO - news) jumped as high as 9 percent in trade on Friday after the world's No. 1 supplier of fiber-optic system equipment posted reassuring fourth-quarter results and confirmed it would come in at the low-end of previous forecasts for 2001.... Nortel's performance is widely seen as a harbinger for such optical component suppliers as JDS Uniphase Corp. (Toronto:JDU.TO - news) (NasdaqNM:JDSU - news) and SDL Inc. (NasdaqNM:SDLI - news), which report results next week. Nortel is among the top customers of those two companies. "The stocks in the space (optical components) went down in the last couple of weeks based on the fears of the Nortel factor," said Jim Liang, analyst at WR Hambrecht & Quist.
