Scumbria,
RE:"Yea, it would be real painful to let people telecommute and eliminate all those fun traffic jams and pollution.
Turning lights off and using lower power bulbs would be really excrutiating."

A novel idea! has anyone suggested this? Did it go over well?

You know Scumbria...you and I aren't that far off environmentally however I see Homo Sapiens as part of the ecology where as most people become offended when you point that out...as evidenced by this thread.
Seems like most people don't have the time to think about it or just don't want to be inconvenienced. Of late they just wake up to late and want to pass the blame on.
I agree with you totally that if people would just turn the lights off a little, etc. it would help a lot.
It would help a lot if they car pooled or just went back to smaller cars...
I understand also that this is not likely to happen on it's own.
I also now know why politicians never point the finger at the voters...LOL...

Jim

PS...I realize you are "trying" to do your part, despite those two SUVs.

Turning lights off and using lower power bulbs would be really excrutiating.

Where I am in New York, there are different rates for electricity depending on the time of day. During peak hours (8AM-8PM weekdays) you pay premium(.14985/kWh) rates. During non peak hours (8PM-8AM weekdays and all hours on weekends or holidays) you pay a MUCH lower (.04995/kWh) rate. The power company installs a special meter to be able to do this. I save about 25% off a standard flat rate billing by opting for this plan. I consciously try to reserve all high watt usage (washer/drier/stove/dishwasher/etc) to off peak hours. It really is easy when the benefits are so apparent and easy to understand. Of course, this isn't nearly so advanced as the west coast plan to ban fireplace usage on alternate days.....but we try here in New York to do our part. Do they have this in CA??? In Co???

Obviously people aren't doing this voluntarily. That's why some are arguing for releasing the cap on electric rates. That's a sure-fire way to force people to conserve. Of course, the underprivileged kind of get it in the shorts, not to mention any politician who even suggests such a painful solution.

Would you agree with the free-market solution? Why or why not?

EDIT: I used to have a 300W halogen torchiere in my place, the kind which is popular among college students and other single guys like myself. Not only was that thing a heat lamp, it was also a fire hazard. Several months ago, I replaced it with a 55W energy-saving torchiere. It's just as bright, emits much less heat, and the dimmer works just as well. I don't know what to do with my old torchiere, however.
