Here are just a few of the results of the Reagan Revolution: 1)Sharp Rise in Homelessness in the 80's. 2)Cuts in funding for mental health services throughout the 1980s. Most of this decline was due to cuts in public hospitals. 3)Making Ketchup a vegetable in the Public schools for needy children on the school lunch program while plenty of humanitarian aid was sent to the "contras" in El Salvador. 4)Increases in military expenditures to the Stars($1.5 trillion over a five-year period). 5)Significant cuts in discretionary spending on social-welfare programs such as education, food stamps, low-income housing, school lunches for poor children, Medicaid (the major program of health insurance for the poor), and Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC). 6)Massive budget deficits, the largest in the country's history(at the time); by the end of Reagan's second term the deficits contributed to a tripling of the national debt, to more than $2.5 trillion. 7)Economic growth benefited mainly the wealthy and those who were wise enough to put all their money in equities. The gap between rich and poor had grown much wider. 8)Relaxed or ignored the enforcement of laws and regulations administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Interior, the Department of Transportation, and the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. 9)After the Reagan Administration and Congress reduced regulations governing the savings and loan industry in the early 1980s, many savings institutions expanded recklessly through the decade and eventually collapsed, requiring bailouts by the federal government that cost taxpayers some $500 billion. 10)In 1994, in a letter to the American people, Reagan disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, a degenerative brain disorder.
