Here is a cut from an article on the CPQ thread.

The other area in which Compaq is building its storage
foundation is storage management software. Company
officials are looking to double the number of their
software developers from 200 to 400 this year. Lewis
said storage hardware is getting cheaper as the price
per megabyte drops and disk drives become faster.

"Eventually, the hardware is going to be free," Lewis
said. "The cost per megabyte is going to be so small it
won't be a factor because you will get capacity and it
will be virtually free. In terms of value, it is going to
move into the software. The percentage of money spent
in storage software will be a lot higher."

The DD business is something else. At the recent INVC cc they said that the TSA suspensions from HTCH are being provided to Seagate below cost to compete with the INVX FSA product which has a 30% cost example. This is another example of DD mentality. The more they sell , the more they lose, whether its the whole DD or components.
