Good points. I agree about the fans not being able to see illegal D. I don't think it would be a bad thing to allow zone. If the league is worried about the middle being clogged up, I think that there are enough good shooters (especially bigmen) to counter that. I think that allowing zone would be another sign that the NBA game is becoming more and more like the college game, and may render college basketball obselete.
