'Just too many players
I have heard that sentiment bounced around. Nearly half of the PCs sold in the U.S. are still built by Mom&Pop operations in quantities of a few dozen at a time. I don't think the bigger players will get serious about consolidation until these While Box manufacturers start going out of business.

Dell, the No. 1 seller of PCs in the United States and No. 2 worldwide, increased its total shipments in the quarter by 40.8 percent -- more than four times the industry average. The only other computer maker to grow faster than the overall market was No. 3 Hewlett-Packard Co., whose shipments rose 18.7 percent.

I think money in CPQ and GTW would be quite speculative. The companies big enough to buy them out probably don't want to expand their exposure to the PC marketplace right now.

I've talked to a number of shocked ex-vignette employees. They changed career paths for a bunch of stock options which are now worthless and they are out of work. None are in dire financial straights, but boy do those dreams die hard.
