You are correct. Analysts can be fickle and change their opinion at the drop of a hat. For my retirement account I buy based on stock movement, both price and volume. In my regular account I look for a company with good growth, a product in demand, and a reasonable price multiple vs expected growth. I don't try and time the market.
In my retirement account I have tried timing the market and fared poorly.
