This is the exact crux of the overall argument.

For some people, the end justifies the means. You might describe it as a fundamental moral belief that is in opposition to your own.

In some cases, if someone believes a certain way, then those that agree ignore criminal behavior in favor of the "big picture" being forwarded by the criminal. Many of these people will then hold that anyone that does not agree with the basic philosophy is lying when they say they do not condone criminal behavior.

The part you might be missing is that criminals group everyone into two groups: criminals and fools who are too stupid to get away with crimes. This puts anyone who is not engaging in criminal behavior in the position of "proving" they are not a criminal; otherwise, they obviously are.

You cannot logically argue with a criminal, or someone that condones criminal behavior, because if you believe that it is wrong to break the law, they have adopted a stance on moral conduct which is at odds with yours.
