Alan,

I believe the position windows is only updated every minute or 30 seconds. That's why at times old positions hang around for a while or new ones don't show up rightaway. When in doubt double check with the executions window.

Alan,

The executions were fine, except for a short sale that I was sure I had lifted before execution (it was INCA). After another trade, I noticed it was active.

I use INCA heavily with IB because of frequent opportunities for price improvement, but it has become commonplace that INCA response takes several seconds (5 to 10). I now frequently get fill confirmations after hitting the cancel button with INCA. I don't use the new Java version yet, but the old TWS has some color coding to show order status that was important to understand. A progression of colors showed: Order received by IB, Order receipt confirmed by exchange, Order filled (if it happens), Order cancel request received by IB, Order cancel confirmed by exchange (unless it already filled). Until you get that confirmation of fill or cancellation from the exchange, you just don't know.
