EMC to Distribute McData Stock to Shareholders of Record Jan. 24
By Yi Ping Ho

EMC (EMC:NYSE - news) will distribute the common stock of its unit McData (MCDT:Nasdaq - news) on Feb. 7 to EMC shareholders of record Jan. 24.

The Hopkinton, Mass., information storage provider acquired McData in 1995. EMC will distribute roughly 0.0369 shares of McData for each EMC share. EMC owns 81 million shares of McData, representing about 74% of the Broomfield, Colo., data storage company's common stock outstanding.

Shares of EMC recently tumbled $3.69, or 5%, to $69.44 in composite trading on the New York Stock Exchange, while McData fell $4.63, or 8%, to $52.89 in trading on the Nasdaq.

EMC is pretty smart, blow out earnings on the 23rd and you get McData shares on the 24th. I would think those 2 days should be hot!!!!!

Dear Conan: From the McData Q@A FAQ [a .pdf file], it looks like the only way one can be assured of receiving shares of MCDT is to hold shares of EMC from January 24th through February 7th:

4. When do I need to own EMC common stock in order to receive McDATA Class A common stock in the
distribution?

You must be an owner of record of EMC common stock by 5:00 PM Eastern time on January 24, 2001, the record
date, in order to receive McDATA Class A common stock in the distribution. You should be aware that if you sell shares of EMC common stock between January 25, 2001 and February 7, 2001, you may also be selling your right to receive McDATA Class A common stock in the distribution.
